On Saturday, Oct. 5, the Canton Boys Varsity Soccer team hosted the Malone Huskies for an early 10 a.m. game. The Bears bested the Huskies 4-1.
The Bears started with possession of the ball and did not let up on the Husky defense for the first 10 minutes. However, a combination of missed shots and Huskies defense kept the ball to the outside of the net and tied the game at 0 for the first 13 minutes.
Then, with 27 minutes remaining Tomi Husenic would break the ice scoring off a breakaway when Malone turned the ball over at midfield.
Malone responded with a goal just five minutes later off a corner kick that found a Malone forward in the Canton box. With the game tied at 1-1 the Huskies started to play with more confidence but they still only were able to get a couple of shots through to Bears goalkeeper Jackson Ames.
The game would remain tied throughout a large portion of the first half until six minutes were left to go. Senior Josh Mclear gave the Bears the lead off a through-ball from Tomi Husinec.
In the second half, the Bears continued to control the ball on the Huskies side of the field. Just two minutes into the second half the Bears would get another goal after Will Andes buried a rebound off Husinec’s first attempt.
Husinec would get a goal of his own with 30 minutes remaining after another forced turnover in the Huskies’ end of the field.
The Bears defense had another stellar game with Ames leading them in the back only giving the Huskies a few scoring opportunities in the second half. Ames made eight saves on nine shots.
The Bears ended with four goals on 24 shots and improved their record to 8-1 in the league.
The Bears play in Massena on Tuesday for a 5:00 kickoff.
