Malone 7, Canton 2
Canton opened the season with a tough loss versus a Section X rival. The Malone Huskies dominated the Canton Bears in a decisive 7-2 victory.
In this matchup the final score was indeed evident of how both teams played. From the start, the Huskies showcased a well-balanced offense and strong defensive play. Their star midfielder Merrick led the charge with two early goals, setting the tone for the match.
Malone’s defense, anchored by a solid back line and an impressive performance by their goalkeeper, kept the Bears from gaining any momentum. Canton managed to score once in the first half, and once in the second, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tide. The Huskies’ ability to control possession and capitalize on scoring opportunities sealed the deal.
Canton 1, Massena 1
In a heart-pounding double-overtime thriller, the Canton Bears and the Massena Red Raiders ended their highly anticipated matchup in a dramatic tie. Both teams put on a showcase of grit, skill, and endurance, leaving fans buzzing as the game stretched beyond regulation.
From the opening whistle, it was clear this would be a hard-fought contest. Canton’s offense came out aggressive, using a balanced attack to keep the Red Raiders on their toes. However, Massena’s defense responded with tenacity, forcing key turnovers and keeping the Bears from gaining an early edge. Likewise, the Red Raiders’ offense found its stride with a mix of running and timely passing, but Canton’s defense refused to break, leading to a back-and-forth first half where both teams struggled to find the goal.
As the second half began, the intensity ramped up even further. Massena managed to break through with a well-executed scoring play, briefly putting them in the lead, only for Canton to respond with a goal of their own off a penalty kick.
Moments later Canton found themselves on the attack yet again. After a beautiful chip pass to a wide open Griffin Coakley by Colden Francey, Griffin flipped the ball off the keepers head bouncing ever so close to the goal line. Just before the ball did indeed cross the plain a Raider defender swooped in with his hands (a highly illegal play) and tossed the ball out of play. This resulted in yet another penalty kick for the Bears. Unfortunately they were unable to capitalize, sending the game into overtime after a deadlocked score at the end of regulation.
The overtime periods were a test of sheer will. Each team had opportunities to seal the win, but both defenses dug in deep. Canton’s secondary delivered key stops in crucial moments, while Massena’s defensive line disrupted Canton’s rhythm.
The fans were on the edge of their seats as the second overtime progressed, but neither side could find a way to break the stalemate. In the end, the game concluded in a tie, a testament to the evenly matched teams and their refusal to quit.
Both Canton and Massena walked away with their heads held high, knowing they had given everything on the field. This showdown will surely fuel the rivalry for future meetings, but until then both squads showed they are contenders to watch throughout the season.
