The Canton Boys Varsity soccer team took to the turf Monday night for its first league game of the season. The Bears put on a dominant performance, earning a 6-2 result against the Gouverneur Wildcats.
Canton got on the board just five minutes into the first half, as sophomore Will Andes got his head on a corner kick from Tomi Husenic and put it past the Wildcat goalkeeper. Just nine minutes later, Zadok Roiger tapped in an indirect kick taken by Husenic from the top of the 18-yard box to make it 2-0.
Gouverneur responded just two minutes later to draw within one after an indirect kick close to Canton’s goal.
Canton would extend its lead once more before halftime when Senior Lucas Howie buried a strike from the 18-yard box on a pass from Senior Josh Mclear with less than a minute remaining in the half. The Bears took a 3-1 lead into halftime.
In the second half, all was settled until Canton was awarded a penalty kick. Husenic capitalized on the penalty to put Canton up 4-1.
With 19 minutes remaining, Sophomore Grady Nee got in on the scoring action with a strike from the 18-yard box, assisted by Husenic.
After coming out of the net at halftime, Senior goalkeeper Jackson Ames was put into service in the attacking side, and delivered with the final goal for the Golden Bears. After a cross from Mclear, Ames made the score 6-1 with a shot from the 18-yard box.
The Bears allowed an own-goal in the final minute of the game to allow Gouverneur to draw within four, but the result was never in jeopardy.
Canton’s goaltending contingent of Ames and Roiger made 10 total saves, while the Bears racked up 19 shots in the contest.
