On a cold and rain soaked day at Clarkson University in Potsdam the Canton Golden Bears Girls lacrosse team avenged two disappointing losses from earlier in the season to the #1 seeded, class D Salmon River Shamrocks by a slim 6-5 margin. The win secured the girls spot in the NYSPHSAA Regional game which will be played tomorrow evening, Thursday May 30th at Potsdam High School at 6:30 pm against Windsor Central School. Windsor is the Binghamton region Section 4 champion.
The game will be livestreamed on the NFHS Network and there will be no admission fee for this regional contest.
On April 11 the Shamrocks defeated the Bears by a score of 17-10 and on May 2nd the Bears were defeated in overtime by a heartbreaking 11-10. On Tuesday evening however the Bears would not be denied. The Shamrocks looked as if they might take over the game as they took an early 3-1 lead. The Bears however decided to put together and run of their own and as the half expired, they enjoyed a slim 4-3 advantage. Anastasia Terrance tied the game early in the third quarter and play was back and forth as each team again traded goals making it a 5-5 tie. Olivia Francey secured the win with just over 4:00 minutes remaining in regulation. The draw was secured by Vivian Coburn and the Bears ran out the remaining time, snapping the Shamrocks 25 game unbeaten streak against Section X opponents. The Bears also held the Shamrocks to a season low 5 goals employing a very stingy zone defense.
