In Canton on Tuesday afternoon, Canton 19, OFA 18
Canton JV girls softball team squeaked out a thrilling victory on Tuesday against the OFA Blue Devils with a score of 19-18. The winning run came in the bottom of the seventh inning as Taylor Martin scampered home from third off a perfectly placed bunt by Mia Wilson. The game was up and down with several lead changes, but the Bears held on for their first win of the season.
“We were on base in every inning which puts more pressure on the defense,” stated Coach Carla Wentworth. “Putting the ball in play gives our team a chance to use their speed and move runners into scoring position. It was a great team effort!”
Offensively runs were scored throughout the lineup including three runs from Martin and Wilson and two runs from Makayla Hogan, Aida Baker, Berkley Brown, and Elise Harris. Lainey Thornton led the team with two hits. Baker, Harris, Elle Manno, Wilson, Emma Hayes and Harlie Larson each had one hit. Baker also had two steals.
Defensively Elle Manno pitched for 6 innings talling six strikeouts. Catching duties were handled by Hayes and Larsen. Third base was the hot corner resulting in 3 putouts apiece from Thornton and Layla Clifford.
The team travels to Salmon River on Thursday for the next game.
