JV Girls Hoops Split Close Games

Friday, Feb. 2 – Canton 39,  Madrid-Waddington 36

Saturday, Feb. 3 – General Brown 35,  Canton 32 (OT)

The Canton girls JV Basketball team split a pair of games this weekend by beating Madrid Waddington on a buzzer beater on Friday 39-36 and then turning around and losing to General Brown Saturday morning in overtime 32-35.

On Friday with the Bears tied and 3.1 seconds left on the clock, Elle White hit a half court shot at the horn for the win. White finished the game with 12 points and nine rebounds. Ashley Aldous also scored double digits, tossing in 10 points. Jenna Larrabee scored seven points and hauled down 14 rebounds in the game. Zayda Gaurin and Emma Bradish Hayes scored six and four points in the winning cause.

The Cubs couldn’t celebrate for long because they had to turn around and play General Brown at home on Saturday morning. General Brown topped the young Bears in overtime 35-32. White and Aldous again led Canton in scoring with 16 and nine points. Elise Harris and Emma Bradish Hayes put up four and three points in the loss.

“Elle White’s buzzer beater from mid court was an exciting way to win and a game that the girls won’t forget,” said Coach Mike Wentworth. “I knew it was in when it left her hand. She is a ‘gamer,’ loves the moment. Jenna’s 14 rebounds and tough defense really kept us in the game.”

“On Saturday we got in foul trouble and looked a little sluggish on defense after playing back-to-back intense games like that. When the game went into OT I didn’t know if we had any magic left.  Just shows that we are young and still have a lot to work on,”  said Wentworth

Canton will play its final two games this week, traveling to Salmon River on Tuesday and then finishing up at home against a tough Malone team on Thursday.
