Bears Battle at the Bridge

This week the Bears attended their second league meet of the season, this time at the Ogdensburg Sectionals course. The course was only a three-mile, rather than the usual 5k, and while it was quite flat, the runners were slowed down by potholes and soft grass.

Canton sophomore Bennett Schmitt led the section again in the girls’ race, placing first with a time of 20:05. Norwood-Norfolk filled in second and third places with runners Allie Snell and Madison Carista, who ran times of 20:38 and 20:53. Canton’s second runner was freshman Ori Casserly, who placed fourth with a 21:07.

Canton’s other top five runners were freshman Lena Frank, who placed 12th in 23:34, junior Violet Foster, who placed 17th in 25:05, and junior Lorelei Harper, who placed 21st in 25:56. Although Canton was missing both Johanna Tupper and CJ McKinley, two of the team’s usual scorers, the Canton team was able to demonstrate its depth.

In the final scores, Norwood-Norfolk came out on top with 28 points, Canton placed second with 44, and Franklin Academy placed third with 74. No other team was able to field a complete team.

On the boy’s team, Norwood-Norfolk’s Dominic Fiacco continued his individual dominance over the section, coming in first with a time of 16:26. Canton filled in many of the subsequent spots, with all five of the Bear’s scorers landing in the top nine.

Canton junior Aiden Rodriguez-Doyle placed second with a time of 17:24 and Massena runner Andrew David placed third in 17:27. Canton’s second and third runners were juniors Lucas Watts and Rylan Lee-Powell, who placed third and fourth with times of 17:37 and 17:52. Canton’s fourth and fifth runners placed 8th and 9th, sophomore Adam Sabatini ran an 18:21, and junior Kaden Worthley ran an 18:22.

The Bears won by a landslide with 28 points. Second went to Potsdam with 63 points, and third went to Norwood-Norfolk with 68 points. Franklin Academy scored 87 points, Massena scored 125, Brushton-Moira scored 129, and Ogdensburg scored 205.
