Canton Varsity volleyball finished out a tough week on the road and unfortunately ended up on the short end of the scoreboard. The Bears went to Malone on Tuesday and despite having some bright spots couldn’t get a set off of the Huskies.
On Friday night the Bears were in an dueling match with Massena but lost in the final set 14-16 giving the win the Massena 3-2.
“The team showed great effort and persistence coming back from two sets down to tie the score. We played hard and made some big strides in our offensive power,” stated head coach Carla Wentworth. “Hopefully this determination will continue as we begin the final push of the season.”
On a positive note the JV girls team posted a great win with a 3-2 decision over the Raiders.
Stats for the Massena game are as follows. Josie Gabriel: 17 kills, 4 digs, 2 blocks, 8 service points. Emma Logan: 13 service points, 4 aces, 10 assists, 2 kills; Haley Perrin: 21 service points, 4 aces, 3 kills; Elle White: 7 kills, 4 blocks; Laurel Whittier: 8 assists, 7 points, 1 ace.
The Bears broke through with a win on Monday night over Tupper Lake. The team took the match in straight sets 25-17, 25-17, 25-11. This was only the second home game for the Bears and they enjoyed the home crowd cheering them on to victory.
“We started off slow but eventually were able to get the offense rolling. After some tough losses last week it was nice to chalk one up in the win column,” stated head coach Carla Wentworth.
The JV team also notched a victory for the Bears which was the first sweep for JV and Varsity teams on the season.
Top performers for the bears were; Josie Gabriel: 9 kills, 1 block, 7 points, 1 ace; Emma Logan: 2 kills, 4 assists, 9 points, 3 aces; Cecily Shipman: 8 points, 5 aces; Laurel Whittier: 2 kills, 9 assists, 6 points, 2 aces; Lainey Thornton: 9 points, 2 aces.
