Beekmantown 2, Canton 1
As the season kicks off the Bears open up against Beekmantown in the Frankie Garrow Memorial Soccer Tournament. The weather was clear with just a few clouds painting the sky. The game starts with a scoreless first 40 minuets.
Moments into the second half a quick goal is scored off a cross by Beekmantown, and Canton then looked to counter. With 23 minuets left in the game talented junior, Josh McLear found the net for a goal. This evened up the game for the brown and gold.
“We won majority of 50-50 balls and took every ball out of the air,” Canton junior defenseman Caleb Hartmann said of the team’s efforts.
Ultimately it wasn’t enough as with five minutes remaining in the game Canton’s defense let up a handball in the box leading to a penalty kick. Beekmantown capitalized and scored the game clinching goal. The Golden Bears then turned to the calendar and circled Sept. 2 as their next game against Chazy.
Chazy 3, Canton 0
The Golden Bears looked to even up their weekend record with a win against Chazy. The Eagles scored 3 quick goals in the first half but Canton was not giving up so easily.
“The first half was quite even despite the three goals,” Golden Bears senior, Garritt Palmer said. “Although the guys proceeded to play hard, we could not put one past Chazy’s goalkeeper.”
In the second half the team came out hot, fighting for every loose ball and becoming more aggressive than they were in the first half. The Eagles goaltender was relentless not giving Canton a sliver of hope. The Bears continuously pushed for more opportunities but none found the back of the net.
“A few flukes in the first sadly determine the outcome of the game,” Palmer noted.
The Golden Bears will rally the troops again in face-off against Potsdam Central on Wednesday, September 6 at 6:00 p.m.
