Canton at Ogdensburg (Pepsi) – Sunday, June 11
The Canton Men’s league summer soccer team began their long-awaited season Sunday night at
Kennedy School with a showdown with the Ogdensburg Pepsi Club. This year’s team is sponsored by
Seaway Valley Prevention Council, Canton Seacomm, and Stadium Sports Bar. The boys in red were back
in action on the field and started off this summer with a 3-0 victory over Pepsi.
The game started off a bit sloppy with both sides adjusting to having some new rostered players
and not having many subs. Canton created a few chances early on, but could not convert on crosses
from Matt Robinson, Ty Jacobs and company.
Pepsi would battle back with some chances of their own, but could not find the target, and only created two shots on goal in the first half. Canton fill-in keeper Eric Shinnick made the two stops early on for the boys in red. The first half would go back and forth but ended in a 0-0 draw.
The second half would be a different story for Canton. They came out with new life and had non-stop
pressure on the ball in Pepsi’s end. About 10 minutes into the second half, Canton forward Holden Woods
(1G, 1A) brought down a long ball from Travis Jordan (1A) and danced by a few defenders on his way to
unleashing a shot on goal that would be deflected in off a Pepsi defender for the 1-0 lead.
Just a few minutes later, Eric Shinnick (1G) who swapped out to play in the field in the second half of the game, would score the goal of the summer so far. Shinnick received a pass from Nick Martinez (1A) then dribbled across the half line, beat a defender, and saw a narrow opening to go for goal. He rifled a shot into the top corner of the net from about 25 yards out, grazing the crossbar and dropping in across the line for a
2-0 lead for Canton.
Canton would go on and convert their third goal just a few moments later off the foot of Ty Jacobs (1G). Jacobs would convert from a goal mouth scramble for his first goal of the year, assisted by Holden Woods.
The boys in red came out in the second half to put the game to bed early. They would go on to cruise
to a 3-0 victory over Ogdensburg Pepsi to start the summer 1-0. Come out to Canton High School to see
them compete in their next game on Wednesday night, June 14, at 6:30 p.m. vs Lisbon/Heuvelton.
