Bears Wrestling Sitting in Second Place Heading into Second Half of the Season

The Bears Varsity Wrestling squad is just a half point behind Gouverneur in the Section X standings heading into the second half of the season. They travelled to Oswego over the Christmas break to compete in a 24-team tournament where they finished 21st out of 24 teams.

Canton competed in the Ken Haines Memorial tournament last Wednesday and Thursday where wrestlers were invited from sections 3, 4, 5, and 10. Many of these wrestlers and teams were state-ranked and the Bears knew it would be a challenge.

Every member of the Bears won at least one match and five wrestlers made it to the third round of wrestle backs. Connor Clifford, Caleb Murcray and Graham Rozler were defeated in the fourth round of wrestle backs. In this very competitive field, four of Canton’s wrestlers barely missed qualifying for eighth place. The Bears only placement came from Potsdam’s Charlie Rossner who reached the semi-finals on the second day of the tournament. Unfortunately, Rossner injured his ankle and was forced to forfeit the rest of his matches due to the injury. He still managed to place sixth in the 172 pound weight class in spite of his injured ankle and hopes to make a speedy recovery.

The Bears look to rebound this week as they return to sectional play. They have one match coming up this Wednesday against Malone where the Bears hope to improve to 3-1.
