On Oct. 21 the varsity football team lost to the Massena Red Raiders by a score of 36-12. The Bears had a total of 13 penalties which gave the Red Raiders 82 free yards.
In the first quarter of the game the Bears’ line played well offensively, creating holes for senior James Bailey to score a touchdown. Bailey finished the game with 60 gained rushing yards. Bears running back Carter Shatraw also scored for the Bears, putting them ahead 12-7 in the second quarter. Later that quarter Raiders DeShawn Walton caught a 49-yard touchdown pass that put the Raiders ahead 15-12 at half.
Defensively the Golden Bears struggled and penalties hurt them, giving the Raiders two first downs because of them. Carter Shatraw led the Bears with nine tackles, followed by captain Erich Zuhlsdorf with eight. Because of a short roster the Bears seemed to tire themselves after half and struggled to stop Massena’s offense.
The Bears will play next away in Ogdensburg at 7 p.m. on Friday in the first round of the playoffs.
