Canton 1, Massena 1
Canton Girls Soccer battled to a 1-1 draw with unbeaten Massena on Wednesday. The contest featured two state ranked teams (Canton 15th in Class C and Massena 24th in Class A) and proved to be an outstanding battle.
Canton continued its recent aggressive and physical play in the first half creating multiple scoring opportunities and controlling the majority of play. With 48 seconds left in the half a Massena forward capitalized on a scoring opportunity and made it 1-0 Raiders at the half. Canton continued pressuring Massena in the second half and finally broke through when Stella Shipman scored unassisted with nine minutes left in game. Both teams battled throughout the two 10-minute overtimes, but no one found the back of the net. Canton improved to 8-2-1 in league play.
Canton 4, Potsdam 0
Canton travelled to Potsdam on Saturday for a highly contested Central League matchup. Canton continued its high-level quality of play and controlled much of the play in the first half while battling high winds. Stella Shipman gathered a loose ball outside of the 18-yard line on a cross from JV call-up Kailin Backus and tucked it neatly just under the crossbar with 3:27 left to play in the first half, giving the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead at halftime. The second half saw the Bears with the wind at their backs. Canton again controlled the majority of play with dominant play at every position. With 10 minutes left in the contest Emily Estabrooks scored two goals only four minutes apart with Claire Coakley picking up both assists. With 47 seconds left in the second half Stella Shipman scored her second goal of the game on a nice pass from Backus. The Bears improved to 9-2-1 heading into their final week of league play.
