The Canton Central modified volleyball teams played two matches this past week. The Gold Team played their first home match on Oct. 4 against Tupper Lake. The Bears took set one 25-15, and the Lumberjacks came back to win the next two sets 25-18 and 25-17. The Brown team hit the road to take on Chateaugay on Oct. 6, and after dropping the first set 12-25, they won the second set 26-24. The Bulldogs won the final set 25-13.

On Monday, Oct. 3, both teams practiced with the St. Lawrence University women’s volleyball team.


Nevaeh Halpin nailed nine aces to lead the Bears against Tupper Lake. Halpin served four straight aces in the second set and added a pair of digs in the match. Zoey Zebedee had three aces and an assist. Amal Moumen also had three aces, and Makayla Hogan chipped in with two aces.


The Bears had an impressive 24 aces against Chateaugay. Adrianna Lesperance, Claire Polniak, and Layla Clifford each recorded six aces. Lesperance added two digs, one kill, and one assist. Clifford chipped in with one dig, one kill, and one block. Polniak had one dig and one kill, and Harlie Larsen contributed three aces and three assists.

“We were able to get some pointers from the SLU volleyball team this week,” said Head Coach Tara Woods. “We can see the players bring each other up after each point, and as a coach, it is my favorite thing to watch.”


Both teams will be on the road this week. The Gold Team plays at Massena on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 5 p.m., and the Brown Team plays at Gouverneur on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 5 p.m.
