Modified Volleyball Picks Up Two Wins

The Canton Central modified volleyball team opened their season with a pair of wins this past week. The Bears, under first-year head coach Tara Woods and assistant coach Lauren Smith, saw an impressive 26 girls come out for the team this year. The team is split into two squads, the Brown and Gold teams, and they will alternate games throughout the season.


On Wednesday., Sept. 7, the Brown team hosted Gouverneur and swept the Wildcats 25-23, 25-10, and 25-18. Taylor Martin led the Bears with six aces, three digs, and one assist. Elle Manno and Paige Godwin contributed five aces apiece. Adrianna Lesperance added four assists and an ace. Layla Clifford served three aces, and Harlie Larsen chipped in with two digs and an assist.


“We opened the season strong with winning all three matches against Gouverneur,” said Coach Woods. “I was very impressed with the girls. We still have a lot of volleyball knowledge to learn.”


On Monday, Sept. 12, the Gold team beat Madrid-Waddington 25-23, 9-25, and 25-20 on the road. Zizi Metcalf paced the Bears with six aces, two assists, one kill, and one dig. Skye Perrin added three aces, two digs, one kill, and one assist. Amal Moumen collected five aces and one assist. Zoey Zebedee had three aces and one kill. Madison Sovie and MaKayla Hogan had one ace apiece.


“Madrid-Waddington was a very strong team with lots of 8th graders,” said Coach Woods. “We had a few long rallies that I was impressed with. The girls communicated with each other and worked as a team. I can’t wait to see how much growth we make this year.”


The Brown team is back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 14 when they play Clifton-Fine Central School at 5 p.m. at Edwards-Knox Central School. The Gold team will play at Ogdensburg Free Academy in their next match on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 5 p.m.
