Brasher Falls – Canton 36, St. Lawrence Central 6
On Friday night, the Golden Bears Football team took on the Larries of St. Lawrence Central. The Bears went into the game with 19 players knowing they would be challenged against the Larries 35.
Toughness and grit were the two words that Senior quarterback David Zuhlsdorf said when asked about the team’s offensive performance. Throughout the game the Bears scored four offensive touchdowns, all of them on the ground. David Zuhlsdorf scored three of the four and his brother, Erich Zuhlsdorf, had the other on a handoff, scoring from the three yard line. The Bears gained 126 yards on the ground, 60 of which came courtesy of Erich and 41 from David.
Sophomore John Wilcox also had a great game. On the opening kickoff, he returned the ball from his own 32 yard line and all the way to the Larries two. Wilcox finished the game with five total tackles and the Bears’ only sack of the night. Helping Wilcox out defensively was senior and team captain James Bailey. Bailey led the bears with eight total tackles. Bailey played dominantly at tackle on the offensive line as well.
Taking on a new position for the week and filling the spot well was Junior Oliver Dollman at safety. Dollman rallied to the ball well and finished with two tackles. More importantly, Dollman led the Bears on the mental side of the game.
“He was helping teammates up after they were tackled and he was congratulating them on big plays,” said David Zuhlsdorf of Dollman’s leadership of the Bears.
To put the game out on a high note, Sophomore Josh Ayrassian intercepted a pass and returned it to the end zone for the Bear’s fifth touchdown of the night. Ayrassian also had three tackles defensively.
The Bears will play next in their home opener against the Ogdensburg Blue Devils on Saturday, at 1:30 p.m.
