In Canton at the Ike Noble Field Complex on Tuesday afternoon, Canton 12, Massena 3

The Canton Modified Baseball Team did something it hasn’t done in at least 16 years – swept two games from Massena – to stay undefeated after a 12-3 win at home Tuesday.

The Bears (11-0) jumped out to a 4-0 lead through three, but the Raiders rallied with three runs in the top of the fourth to make it a one-run game. Canton responded by plating four runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth to pull away.

“We faced some serious adversity for one of the few times this year and the entire team responded exactly like an undefeated veteran team should,” said Coach Mark Mende, whose team beat Massena 5-1 earlier in the season.

The Bears blew the game open with their big fourth inning. Jack Parker led off by reaching on an error, JJ Ahlfeld singled, and after two quick outs, Charlie Todd laced a two-run double. Jackson Ames followed with an RBI single to score Todd, and he scored on another Massena error. Massena committed seven errors all told.

Ahlfeld was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and a run batted in. Todd was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored, and Ames was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Shoham Zuker was 2-for-4, Zadok Roiger was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI and Gavin Schryver had a hit.

Todd started the game on the mound for the Bears and cruised through three innings before losing steam in the fourth. The first Massena hit of the game, followed by a walk, started the inning, and after a strikeout, another hit plated a run. A walk followed and Todd was relieved by Ames. Two more scored after a hit batsman, a walk and a wild pitch before Ames ended the rally.

Roiger came on in the fifth and went the final three innings, giving up a walk and hit batsman to go with four strikeouts.

The Bears close out the season with a game at Heuvelton Thursday at 4:30 and a home game Friday against Potsdam at 4:30.
