In Canton at Ike Noble Fields on Wednesday afternoon, Canton 5, Malone 4
Following a long umpire’s conference just in front of the pitching mound, Sam Roiger was called out due to the conclusion that he had interfered with the catcher’s ability to make a play, a.k.a. “fielder’s interference”. The dramatic action which took place just prior to this decision was a steal attempt by Scott Ahlfeld from third base. As Ahlfeld slid into home with a cloud of dust, the pitcher had made an attempt to throw him out at the plate and simultaneously Sam Roiger laid the ball down with a fantastic bunt. The home crowd erupted and the guys came from the dugout to shake hands as they presumed the contest to be over as the score had been notched at 4 apiece.
The Bears settled in with the umpires decision as they entered extra innings. Two huge plays by senior Gavin Thompson and the win was secured on senior day. On defense Thompson laid out in dramatic fashion and snagged a would be outfield hit for the visiting Huskies. Using his bat he made the second huge play of the day with a walk off RBI single to win the game in extra innings 5-4.
The Bears play tonight against Massena at 4:30 on the field at Clarkson University.
