TROY, N.Y. – The Liberty League has announced its weekly award winners and two Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) track & field student-athletes have been recognized. Senior Jacy Scharlow has been named the women’s Field Performer of the Week, while freshman Sean Shannon has garnered the men’s Rookie of the Week award.
This is the second straight week that Scharlow (Spring Hill, FL / F.W. Springstead) has been honored. She earned the most recent recognition after winning the 12-competitor high jump at the Utica Holiday Classic with a maximum effort of 1.68 meters. She reached the height on her third attempt to place .06 ahead of the second place finisher (1.62 meters). It was Scharlow’s lone event in the meet, in which Rensselaer placed third of 12 schools.
A multiple All-America, she was tabbed last week after winning the high jump at the Smith Winter Classic with a leap of 1.65 meters.
Shannon (Waddington, NY / Madrid-Waddington) was chosen as the top rookie on the men’s side after he had a pair of runner-up finishes at Utica. He was second of 30 entrants in the 800 meter run, which he completed in 2:01.71. He was less than a second from first place (2:01.06) and nearly a second ahead of the third place finisher (2:02.68). He also ran in the 4×400 relay, anchoring the squad to a time of 3:33.80. The team was in fourth when he took the baton but placed second overall by nearly a second (3:34.72). There were 14 relay teams and Rensselaer, which was sixth in the meet, had the second and third place squads.
In his collegiate debut at Smith the week before, Shannon beat 16 others in the 800 meters with a time of 2:02.36 and he ran on the 4×400 relay, helping the unit to a third place finish. They had a time of 3:37.54, which was almost seven seconds ahead of the fourth place team’s 3:44.26.
Rensselaer’s next meet is January 15 when it is back in Central New York for the Utica Winter Opener.
