
The Canton girls volleyball team, still riding a high from their Section X class C win last week, won the overall Section X match Saturday with a 3-0 win over Massena and a 3-1 win over Malone.
The Bears beat Massena 25-10, 25-8 and 25-18. Outside hitters Katie Bennett and Ava Hoy were strong performers. Bennett had 14 kills, 2 blocks, 2 digs, 3 aces and 9 serving points and Hoy supplied 8 kills, 2 blocks, 7 aces and served up 9 points.
Setter Mattigan Porter contributed 20 assists, and a kill. Opposite hitter Riley Taylor served up 11 points and also posted 4 aces, 2 digs and a kill. Middle hitter Julianna Richardson added 6 kills.
The Bears’ win over the Malone Huskies started with a 22-25 loss but in true Bears fashion they regrouped and came back stronger winning the next three 25-12, 25-16 and 25-9. When the Bears have a challenge they know what they need to do and that they did Saturday.
It was a team effort with several players contributing to the win. Hitter Katie Bennett supplied 14 kills, 3 blocks, a dig and 4 points served. Ava Hoy had 12 kills, 2 blocks, 5 aces and 8 points served.
Setter Mattigan Porter had 25 assists, 1 kill, 4 digs, 4 aces and served up 10 points. Hitter Riley Taylor had 5 digs, 1 kill, 4 aces and 9 points served. Libero Jade Stevenson added 5 digs and 5 points served.
JV player Katie Metcalf had an impressive start to her varsity career by contributing 1 kill, 1 ace and served up 5 points. Another JV player, Laurel Whittier helped out with 2 assists.



Canton is now off to play in the state regional championship this Wednesday against Saranac Lake at Suny Canton Roos House.
