The Canton Golden Bears Varsity Softball team blanked Massena 15-0 in five innings to open its NAC Central Softball season on Tuesday. Emily Wentworth struck out three in three innings and Hadley Alguire fanned two in two innings to combine on a two-hit shutout (cover photo, Lexi Huiatt with the outstretched catch).

Brooke Larrabee lined two singles and a doubles and drove in two runs to lead the winning offense which also featured a single and a double by Lexi Huiatt and Sydnee Francis who drove in two runs. Alguire doubled and singled and scored four runs, Wentworth singled and scored three times and Cate DeCoteau and Hadleigh Thornton each added singles. Jaylyn Cook and Caitlyn Reed produced the Massena hits.

“We came out and scored five runs in the first and followed that up with four each in the 2nd and 3rd innings. When you put runs up like that and throw strikes it makes for fun softball. This was probably our best defensive game so far, so all the hard work is paying off.” stated Head Coach Mike Wentworth. The Bears will be in action again on Thursday as they will make the trip to Brasher to face off with St. Lawrence Central.

The JV Bears also topped Massena by the score of 24-1. Lucy DeCoteau, Ava Hoy, Katie Metcalf and Olivia Sero each had 2 hits apiece in the game. Courtney Peters pitched a two hitter, striking out 7 batters on the day.
