
Canton and Hammond split in a non league doubleheader which opened the NAC Softball season on Tuesday.
The host Bears won the opening game 8-2 behind a 13-strikeout two-hitter by Emily Wentworth and Hammond took the nightcap 7-6.
Canton 8 – Hammond 2: Emily Wentworth struck out 13 in a two-hitter and also sparked the Bears’ offense by drilling a double and two singles and scoring two runs. Brooke Larabee doubled and singled and Hadley Alguire ripped a triple and scored two runs. Lexi Huiatt singled twice and scored twice. Hadleigh Thornton, Natalie Warner and Cate DeCoteau added singles. Zoey Cunningham and Alyvia Crosby singled for Hammond.

Hammond 7 – Canton 6: Zoey Cunningham and Alyvia Crosby both tripled in the first inning for Hammond which tallied the winning run in the fifth inning when Crosby drew a walk and came around to score on a single by Hannah Belknap. Winning pitcher Sydney Tanner, Avery Kenyon and Brooklyn Arquitt also singled for the Red Devils. Hadley Alguire pitched for the Bears striking out seven in the nightcap. Emily Wentworth and Canton and Alguire doubled and singled for Canton and Lexi Huiatt and Natalie Warner singled twice. Sydnee Francis also added a single. “I like the way we battled at the plate and were aggressive on the bases today. We will get better on the defensive side of the ball. We have a lot of girls that are playing totally new positions so I look for improvement every day.” stated Bears head coach Mike Wentworth.
Canton Athletic Director Bill Porter wanted to thank Coach Wentworth for the countless hours he spent in preparing the field alongside the C.C.S. maintenance team including Doug Cole, Jarrod Flener and Jason Chasse. The field was absolutely beautiful!

Canton will face Heuvelton and Hermon-DeKalb in two other doubleheaders on Thursday and Friday.
