On Wednesday night, the girls varsity basketball team beat St. Lawrence Central to advance to the championship for the Overall Section X title. The 60-53 victory was the Bears’ third victory over the Larries this season. Canton played weak defense and looked, at times, frazzled on the offensive end. St. Lawrence Central was very offensive minded throughout the contest and made many outside shots.
While Canton struggled to stop the jump-shot on defense, on offense the Bears were able to find their own jump-shot to stay in the contest. Sarah Sieminski scored the team’s first six points on two three pointers. The second quarter was Canton’s best defense of the evening and when the Bears found a rhythm on offense. Overall, Canton hopes to play a smoother and more intense game in the future. The lack of enthusiasm on defense will look to be fixed in the upcoming days before state playoffs begin.
Scoring for the Bears, Sieminski had 21 points, including three, three pointers, Maddie Hoy had 14, Katie Chisholm had nine, and Lexi Huiatt and Mary Lobdell each added six. Wednesday was also the Section X award ceremony. Awards and photos are as follows:
