Despite trailing the entire game until the 30 second mark in the fourth quarter and possibly setting a modern day basketball turnover record, the Canton JV Girls Basketball team survived and beat Saranac Central 45-42 at SUNY Canton on Saturday night. With this win it pushes the Bears record to 2-1 on the season.
The junior Bears were trailing 35-31 starting the last frame and were down by seven with two minutes left but battled back and came away with the win.
“I was proud of the girls tonight. This was a tough one and a good learning experience for everyone. If we get better at taking care of the basketball things will be much easier on everyone,” said Coach Mike Wentworth.
The Bears were led in scoring by the “Twin Towers” again as Ava Hoy and Amelia Rodee scored 14 and 13 points to pace Canton. Rounding out a balanced scoring attack on the night were Lindsey Filiatrault seven points, Courtney Peters five points, Camryn Sipher four points and Alyssa Jacob two points.
The Bears will be hitting the road on Tuesday as they load up the big yellow sleigh to make the trip down Route 11 and face the undefeated Gouverneur Wildcats. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
