The Canton Bears varsity hockey team lost to both Hilton and Adirondack to open their season last weekend at the Potsdam Tournament.

The Bears started off their season facing Hilton, a strong team from the Rochester area. The Bears started sluggish, falling behind 2-0 early in the first period. The momentum started to shift late in the first, but early in the second period Hilton netted two more goals to make it 4-0.

The Bears then seemed to come alive, controlling the last minutes of the second period. The Bears got on the board halfway through the third stanza, with senior forward Robert Reed netting a goal from junior defenseman Peter Coakley and sophomore forward Daniel Mahoney.

The game was back and forth from then on, but the Bears were unable to make a final push, with the game ending 4-1.

Saturday’s game against Adirondack brought more disappointment for the Bears. Though the game seemed back and forth, Adirondack scored three unanswered goals, and blanked the Bears 3-0.

The Bears will look to bounce back at their home tournament on Friday, Dec. 6, against Penfield at 5:30 p.m. and then Saturday, Dec. 7, against Whitesboro at 11:30 a.m. Both games will be held at the Canton Pavilion.
