The Canton girl’s modified volleyball team wrapped up a successful season posting their sixth win in a row last Thursday with a hard fought 2-1 win over Gouverneur. The Bears won 25-14, 21-25, and 25-14.
In the opening set, Canton opened a 15-6 lead following seven straight serves, including two aces, from Kyleigh Gollinger. The Bears were up 22-14 a short time later, and Josie Gabriel closed the set with three straight serves including an ace to take a 1-0 lead.
In the second set, Katie Metcalf got the Bears going with four straight aces as Canton jumped out quickly to a 4-0 lead. The Wildcats countered with a 6-0 run. But the Bears came right back with four straight points to regain the lead, including a strong kill from Laurel Whittier. The lead bounced back and forth with neither team able to go up more than two points. Later in the set, Gouverneur notched five straight points to go ahead 21-16. The Bears stopped the run thanks to a tremendous save and point from Gabriel, and then Metcalf delivered five straight service points, four on aces as the Bears tied the set 21-21. But the Wildcats went on to win the set 25-21.
In the final set, Metcalf served four straight times giving the Bears a 4-1 lead. After the Wildcats closed the lead to 6-5, Maura Onyper had a nice serve and Gollinger a kill to increase the lead to 8-5. Lilly Borrelli delivered a strong kill a short time later as the lead grew to 9-6. The entire Canton team passed the ball very well in the final set, and then strong serving from Metcalf and Gabriel and another kill from Whittier gave Canton a 25-14 win and their sixth straight victory to end their season.
