The Canton girl’s modified volleyball team won their third straight on Thursday beating Madrid-Waddington 2-1.
The Bears got off to a strong start in the first set jumping out to a 16-0 lead thanks to 16 straight serves, including seven aces from Katie Metcalf. Laurel Whittier notched two kills as the lead was 20-4 a short time later. The Bears went on to win the set 25-6.
In the second set, Emma Logan helped Canton stretch a 7-5 lead to 13-5 with six straight serves. The Bears then opened an 18-10 lead following a kill from Whittier. Metcalf added another ace, and Josie Gabriel nailed a pair of kills, including on set point as the Bears won 25-11.
The Yellowjackets opened a 7-3 lead in the third set. Vanessa Mousaw served four straight times to tie the set. Zoey Mattice had two terrific digs on the tying point. Madrid-Waddington countered scoring the next four points. They would extend the margin to 19-11. But the Bears kept fighting and pulled within six points, 21-15 after a nice return over the net from Paige Blackmer. The Yellowjackets went on to win 25-16.
The Bears are next in action on Monday, October 21 when they travel to Gouverneur.
