On Friday, the Canton Swimmers got on a bus prepared to take on St. Lawrence Central, their biggest competition yet. Hours later they found themselves warming up in the pool, knowing that this meet would be the biggest of the season. Winning this meet would mean having won 100 meets in a row.

When the buzzer sounded and the swimmers dove into the pool for the first event, the room became alive with noise. Yelling and cheering could be heard from every direction encouraging the swimmers to win the race. Each Canton swimmer put everything they had into this swim meet. Whether it meant swimming 10 laps in the 500, one lap in a relay, or cheering on their teammates from the sidelines, every person on the Canton team was involved in this meet. Canton’s hard work throughout the season and their unbelievable drive during this meet is what brought them to victory and more importantly, their 100th meet won in a row! The Bears took it to the Larries with a 55-39 win.

One reason Canton was able to pull off this win was because of their excellent relay teams. Canton took first and third in both the 200 Medley Relay and the 200 Freestyle Relay. Bella Jaskowski, Julia Domena, Maya Thomas, and Emily Wentworth took 1st in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 2:00.14. This relay team is currently in first on the Section 10 Leaderboard. Emma Berg, Lexi Stuntz, Carmen Mussen, and Dharma Crabtree took third in this event as well. Later on in the meet, during the 200 Freestyle Relay, Wentworth, Grace O’Neill, Domena, and Brooke Larrabee took first with a time of 1:50.96 and Mussen, Thomas, Crabtree and Emily Ames also took third in this relay. At the end of the meet Canton placed second and fourth in the 400 Freestyle Relay. Canton’s battle against St. Lawrence Central ended in a victory for the Bears, but it wasn’t easy. The Bear’s hard training at practice each day is what physically prepared them for this meet, but their team spirit and unity are what encouraged each girl to give it their best on Friday. As The Lady Bears drove into Canton, Friday night, they were escorted by the police through the town cheering and shouting as they celebrated their 100th win. The Bears have held onto this streak through generations of swimmers and they don’t plan on giving it up anytime soon. Their next meet is Thursday against Potsdam in the Canton Pool.
