In five sets the Varsity Volleyball team fell to their route 11 rival Tuesday night. 25-14,26-28,25-15,20-25, 22-25 were the final scores. The teams played out long, scrappy rallies however, the Sandstoners were able to outlast the Bears.
Canton came out strong in the first set, they played with high energy, strong communication, and an offensive mindset. These qualities declined throughout the following set. As Potsdam gained momentum Canton allowed themselves to make unforced errors. The third set showed hope for the Bears. They found a rhythm and continually were successful at serving and hitting. To finish the match the Bears had a lead of 19-15 in the fifth set and Potsdam went on a serving run to come back and close the match.
This finish was upsetting for Canton. Although they played some strong points, the unforced errors and lack of mental toughness loss the match. Canton hopes to improve their ability to finishes sets when having the lead.
The Bears’ defense was led by libero Gabbie Rauth who had 22 digs and returned 29 serves. The offense was held up by powerhouse hitters Sydeny Lorenc and Gretchen Warner who had 19 and 18 kills respectively. Warner also served five acese for the Bears, while setter Kelsea Whitter assisted to 38 kills as a career high.
Canton plays again next Tuesday against Tupper Lake at home at 6 p.m. The Bears hope to use this week of practice to prepare for the second half of their season. As always the team loves to see fan support at home matches so please support Canton Varsity Volleyball. Go Bears!
