The Canton girl’s modified volleyball team continued to roll on Thursday afternoon as they won for the third straight time beating Madrid- Waddington 2-1 in Canton.  The Bears won the first two sets, 25-14 and 25-12, and dropped a close third set 23-25.

In the first set, Canton opened an early 6-2 lead thanks to a pair of aces from Autumn Bronson.  The Yellowjackets came right back and reeled off five straight points to take a one-point lead, 7-6.  After the Bears tied the game with a point, Laurel Whitter served an ace and Josie Gabriel pounded down a kill to put the Bears back on top 9-8.  A short time later, Canton led 14-11, but strong serving from Emma Logan and Bronson, propelled the Bears on an 11-3 run to close the set.  Logan had two aces and Bronson had one ace and a point during that stretch.

The score remained close early in the second set before the Bears eventually pulled away.  Aces from Bronson and Whittier put Canton ahead 4-2 early on.  Madrid-Waddington scored two straight including a nice kill to tie the game 4-4.   The Bears then went on a 10-4 run thanks to a pair of aces from Kyleigh Gollinger and Logan, and one from Gabriel to lead 14-8.  Canton ended the set with an 11-4 streak and won it when Kate Metcalf nailed a kill off a nice pass from Zoey Mattice.

Lily Borrelli served three straight times staking Canton to a 3-0 lead to start the third set.  An ace from Metcalf and two good serves from Paige Blackmer put the Bears up 7-3.  The Yellowjackets countered on the next play with four straight aces to take their first lead of the set, 8-7.  That lead would be extended to 13-8 before Canton rallied with five consecutive points to tie the set at 13 apiece.  Madrid-Waddington kept a narrow lead for the next several points before Canton rallied again.  Mattice served for two straight points and Borrelli added a kill as the Bears built a 22-20 lead.  But the Yellowjackets countered again and won the set with a 5-1 run.

The Bears are next in action on Monday, September 23 when they travel to Tupper Lake.
