The Canton girls basketball team lost to Mechanicville on Tuesday in Saratoga Springs. The 43-58 loss in the first round of state playoffs ended the Golden Bears’ season. The Red Raiders simply out-played the Bears, their defensive press caused Canton to turn over the ball far too often. While Canton tried to battle under the net, the Bears were simply not making shots on offense and feeling the fatigue of a fast-paced game in the second half.

Canton kept the score close throughout the first minutes of the game but by the half the raiders held the lead 19-30. In the second half Canton struggled to get back on defense and was unable to cash-in on offense. Canton, who defeated Mechanicville last season to go to the final four, put in full effort but the game belonged to the Raiders. Emily Wentworth led the team with 14 points, while Sarah Sieminski, Lexi Huiatt and Katie Chisholm followed with nine, eight, and seven points respectively.

As we reflect on the 2019-2020 season of Canton Girls’ Basketball there is a lot to be proud of, it was a historic season. For the eighth time in a row the Canton varsity girls basketball team won Section X, the longest streak in the history of Section X basketball, male or female. They won the Section X Overall title for the second year in a row. Eight seniors leave this team, as the underclassmen hope to work in the offseason and continue to grow the dominance of Canton Girls Basketball in the future. Go Bears!
