Seven Canton swimmers qualified for the NYSPHSAA Swimming State Championships November 17th and 18th in Webster, NY. By virtue of their Sectional victories or state qualifying times, Maya Thomas, Maysa Moumen, Lexi Stuntz, Gretchen Braun, Skyler Sanders, Tessa Alguire, and Kaitlyn Redfern will represent Canton Central and Section X at the state meet.
Canton won all three relays at Sectionals while setting two Section X relay records. All seven swimmers will compete on a relay at States. The 200 Medley Relay (Stuntz, Redfern, Thomas, and Alguire) and 400 Free Relay (Stuntz, Sanderson, Redfern, Braun) will hope to lower their record setting times from Sectionals. The 200 Free Relay (Moumen, Thomas, Alguire, Braun) will hope to gather the Section X record in their quest to improve their Sectionals time.
Both Alguire and Thomas will also compete in one individual event each at States. Both swimmers are first time individual qualifiers and advanced due to their excellent races at Sectionals. Alguire will swim the ever competitive 50 freestyle and Thomas will swim the 100 butterfly.
Stuntz, Redfern, and Braun will also compete in two individual events at the meet. Stuntz will swim in the 500 yard freestyle as well as the 100 yard backstroke, repeating her events from the 2022 State meet. As a junior, she is a six-time individual qualifier for states and has qualified in two events all three years of her high school career. Redfern returns to the state meet for the second year in a row in both the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 breaststroke. After setting the Section X record in both events this season she is excited to compete at States with a hope to make finals in both events. Braun is competing at States in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke. During a storied season, she set an astounding five individual Section X records and is part of one Section X relay record. Braun is currently seeded third in NY State in the 100 freestyle and is hoping make waves in both the freestyle and backstroke this weekend.
This will be an exciting end to the season as these top Section X swimmers will challenge themselves against fast competition at the state level.
