JV Boys Basketball Starts Season with Weekend Split

The JV boys basketball team started their season Dec. 9 and 10 with a win and a loss in Watertown. The Bears played both the Watertown Cyclones and the Central Square Redhawks. The Bears also started league play on Monday night against Gouvernuer.

On Friday night the Bears suited up to play against the Watertown Cyclones. The Bears came out in a 2-3 zone which the Cyclones offense capitalized off by hitting multiple three-point shots. The Bears also struggled offensively by turning the ball over 35 times. The final score of the game was 73-36 Cyclones.

The unsatisfied Bears team traveled back to Watertown Saturday morning to play against Central Square. In the opening minutes of the game Canton took the lead off of two three-balls from Zadok Roiger along with another three from Paul Redfern and an and-one of his own. Through three quarters of the game the Bears defense played extremely strong, allowing only 30 points. The Final Score was 69-54. Freshman Parker Hurlbut led the Bears with 12 points, followed by sophomore Lucas Howie with 10.

On Monday night the Bears played their first league game of the year, beating the Wildcats in Gouvernuer 67-49. The Bears came out of the gates extremely aggressively and effectively went on a 24-4 run in the first 7 minutes. The Bears were led offensively by Zadok Roiger who had 16 points and Jackson Ames who scored 14. The Bears shot 63 percent from the free throw line. In the fourth quarter freshman Ciaran O’Brien had some great minutes on both sides of the ball, scoring seven with an assist and a blocked shot.
