JV Girls Soccer Off to a Hot Start

The Bears faced the Malone Huskies Monday in their first home game. They started out with their first goal from Olivia Sommerstein as a result of a beautiful cross in from Shaylee Holmstead. They ended up only scoring one goal in the first half but took the game out of reach in the second.

Kailin Backus started things off for the Bears in the second half with a solo run up the field resulting in Canton’s second goal of the game. That wasn’t it from Backus as she notched two more penalty kicks resulting in a hattrick. To finish things off a nice cross by Sara Aldous led to a Shaylee Holmstead goal.

The Bears move to 3-1 on the season with their 5-1 win over Malone.

“Extra credit to Salma Moumen,” Coach Kim French said. “A lot of hard work on the outside half/wing working the ball around players with patient aggression.”

They Bears traveled to Massena last Thursday, Sept. 15 and won in dominating fashion, 3-1 for their first win in Massena in a long time. They kicked things off with an Olivia Sommerstein goal as a result of a Kailin Backus cross and a Sarah Aldous pass.

Their second goal came from a Kailin Backus direct kick which ended up in the top right corner of the net putting the Bears up 2-0. Massena responded with their first and only goal of the game getting it back to a one goal game. Sarah Aldous finished it off with a nice chip shot over the goalie extending the lead to 3-1.

A solid defensive performance by Goalie Calie Tebow kept the Raiders to one with help from Larrabee, Creurer, and Mousaw who chased down several runs to stop Massena from scoring.

“A lot of work in the middle of the field with a fairly even match but offsides trap worked well with sweeper Eliza Creurer talking to push up the defense which allowed us to dominate much of the game,” French commented on the game.
