In Gouverneur on Thursday
On Thursday, the Lady Bears travelled to Governeur to face the Wildcats. Walking into the game the Bears knew they were going to have to battle for all 80 minutes. With some key players still out, Winnie Downs and Vivian Coburn were moved up from the JV squad to help give the Bears some fresh legs. Both girls did a great job in trying to help fill the roles of Maddie Hoy and Emily Estabrooks who were both missing from last night’s game.
In both halves of the game, the Lady Bears found themselves in a constant battle with the Wildcats. The Bears showed high instenty, cooperation and determination throughout the entire game. There was never a dull moment. Goalkeeper Bree Rogers, who is still fighting a finger injury that occurred last game, was stellar and made several key saves to help keep the Bears in it. The defense did a good job with stopping the Gouverneur girls from having any good shots on net and sweeper Megan Martin really stepped up her defensive role.
The Bears had some new faces helping out in the center halfback position to help fill some missing roles. Senior Camryn Sipher and Freshman Winnie Downs stepped up to help give Seniors Haley Stevenson and Quinn Woodward some well deserved breaks throughout the game. Forward Bryce Butterfield was let off her defensive leash and received her opportunity to play on the front line, where she generated many dangerous opportunities. All the Canton forwards did a great job coming back to help the halfbacks on defense. The whole team showed relentless effort for all 100 minutes of the game.
At the end of 80 minutes with a score of 0-0 the Bears knew they were going to have to battle for another 20 minutes. Throughout the entire 100 minutes the Bears never gave up. Unfortunately in the first overtime , Gouverneur converted a header off a corner kick putting them ahead 1-0. The Bears never let up and fought for another 15 minutes, generating several scoring chances but were unable to put one in.
The Bears start off their 6 game home streak tomorrow in a non-league game vs the undefeated Class A Watertown Cyclones at 11 am.
