The Canton Golden Bears Varsity Volleyball Team had their first home game of the season Tuesday night. After starting the season on the road with a win last Thursday at Gouverneur, the girls have now played as many games as they played in their shortened season last year. With the 2020 season delayed and shortened due to Covid, it’s clear they are more than ready to play their 2021 season.

In Gouverneur the Bears won 3-1 over the Wildcats. After losing their first set 25-21 the Canton girls took the next three, 25-20, 25-18 and 25-21 respectively.
Sophomore Ava Hoy had an impressive, but not surprising, start to the season with 16 kills, 2 aces, and 8 points served. A young player who was pulled up early, she has been a consistent contributor to the Bears team. Senior Mattigan Porter also came out of the gate strong, with 5 digs, 20 assists , 2 aces, and 21 points served.

Back home in Canton Tuesday, the Golden Bears beat the OFA Blue Devils handily in three sets, 25-12, 25-5 and 25-13. Another solid performance by sophomore Ava Hoy with 8 kills for the team. Five seniors have also started the year strong. Katie Bennett had 6 kills, 4 aces and 11 points served.
Senior Riley Taylor contributed 2 aces, and closed the last two sets with 11 points served. Julianna Richardson handed out 4 kills, Jade Stevenson served 8 points and Mattigan Porter had 6 assists and 4 points served.
The Bears play again Friday when they head up Route 11 to face their rival Potsdam with a 6pm start time.
