Boys Varsity Soccer Squeezes by Hermon-DeKalb in Overtime

The Canton Golden Bears Boys Varsity Soccer team claimed its first victory in Section X play, 3-2 in overtime over Hermon-Dekalb.

The Bears started off flat, and poor play in the first half led to a 2-0 deficit. Both goals were preventable and defensive breakdowns led to problems for the Bears on the small Hermon-Dekalb field.

The Bears offense could not produce anything for most of the first half, but with some changes to positions the Bears found the back of the net when Chris Downs threw it to Brad Frank, who assisted Josh Aldous as he put the ball in the net. Going into Halftime, it was 2-1 Hermon-Dekalb.

The second half saw improvements from the Canton offense, and with the short field Chris Downs threw the ball in from the sideline to the 18 yard box. One such play led to Frank scoring his first goal of the season, with Downs getting the assist. This made the score 2-2. Despite quality scoring chances coming from Daniel Rosser, Owen Hall, and Josh Aldous, none of the Bears forwards could find the net, and the game went into a sudden death overtime. The Bears were all over Hermon-Dekalb and it felt like it was just a matter of time before a ball went in. Tanner Hazelton led Frank perfectly with a pass, and he buried it for the OT winner.

The Bears will break in their home field on Friday against Massena.
