The Canton Golden Bears season came to an end Saturday in the Section X class B finals against the Gouverneur Wildcats by a score of 8-3. The Bears gave up two runs in the first inning and allowed runs in every inning except the third. Gouverneur was anchored by pitcher Connor Wood who went the distance.

The Bears looked to muster some life with runs from Colby Young and Scott Ahlfeld in the top of the second following a Gavin Thompson single. The Bears could never seem to string together outs and defensively struggled to throw down Wildcats whose offensive strategy was clearly designed to be aggressive with base running, stealing on many occasions, translating to runs.

Canton did mange one more run from Eric Zuhlsdorf. Gavin Thompson had an RBI and hit the ball well for the Bears. Eric Zuhlsdorf pitched three innings for Canton, Tanner Hazelton pitched two, and Colby Young closed out the game and season for the Bears.

Canton did have multiple players recognized for their individual efforts throughout the season. Senior team captain Colby Young was honored as a Senior Student-Athlete of Distinction Award winner. This award is presented to seniors who have maintained a cumulative grade point average exceeding 90% throughout high school. Colby was also selected as the team Sportsmanship Award winner. Junior Scott Ahlfeld was recognized as a First Team All-Northern selection and sophomore teammate David Zuhlsdorf was honored as a Second Team All Northern.

The young Bears look to capitalize on a positive season this summer by playing on and 18U travel team looking to get back to the championship game next spring!
