The Canton “Mod squad” girls basketball team defeated the St. Lawrence Central Larries on Thursday April 1. This was Canton’s first home game and the second game for the Canton Lady Bears. After a tough loss on Wednesday night in Potsdam they came back eager for their first win of the season.
The Bears worked hard from the beginning, Tessa Alguire #12 tipped the ball to Jenna Larrabee #33, then Sara Aldous #2 started the beginning of the game with a layup. The Bears then hustled into defense, pressuring SLC with a full press. Salma Moumen #15 had gone up strong to the basket, she had made her first basket of the season. When the first quarter ended the score was 10-4 with Canton taking a six point lead.
The girls came back into the second half more powerful than before. The Bears continued to play strong defense but SLC had a couple of steals. Ava Newvine #51 hustled and played defense inside the paint. In the fourth quarter Larrabee, Alguire, and Olivia Francey #3 all pitched in two points for the Bears. Aldous and Olivia White #11 both pitched in four points. Autumn Northup #55 cheered her team on keeping the Bears with a positive attitude. Canton’s “Mod Squad” is very lucky to have Varsity Coach Jim DiSalvo guide them through this season. The Bears maintained the lead in all four quarters. The final score was 42-15.
Finishing for the Larries, the lead scorer McDonald scored 8 points, Dow scored 5 points and Frasher ended with 2 points. For the Lady Bears, Francey led the team with 12 points, followed by Aldous with 10, White with 8, Alguire with 6, Moumen with 4, and Larrabee rounded out the scoring with 2 points.
The Golden Bears “Mod Squad” will be in action again on Tuesday, April 13 at the Canton High School Gym at 5 p.m. and will be facing the Potsdam Sandstoners. Please tune in on the NHFS network or the Canton Booster Club will also be going live on Facebook.
