On Friday night in an empty Jerry Hourihan Gymnasium because of Covid-19 regulations, the Canton Girls JV Basketball team faced off with the Hermon DeKalb Green Demons in the second game of a two game series. The young Bears won game one on a buzzer beater from 8th grader Calie Klassen on Tuesday night.
The game again was a battle, with both teams playing a very fast and physical style. The Bears jumped out early to a ten point lead but the Demons clawed back to go ahead by one after the first quarter. The young Bears got into a rhythm in the second quarter behind sophomores Hadley Alguire’s 16 points and Lindsey Filiatrault’s 12 points. “Both girls played very well tonight at both ends of the floor. I expect a lot out of those two and tonight they did not disappoint.” First year player and “Defensive Dynamo”, Etta Coburn also chipped in six points for the Bears.
Rounding out the scoring was Calie Klassen(6), Laurel Whittier(4), Courtney Peters(2), Olivia Sero(2),Wyatt Newman (2) and Winnie Downs(1) Leading the Demons in scoring was 8th grader Olivee Simser who led all scorers with 22 points. “With our restricted schedule, we are not playing very many games. I keep telling the girls that we have to play every game like it is our last and they seem to be getting better every day. ” The Bears will be in action again on Tuesday night as they travel down Route 11 to face off with the Potsdam Sandstoners.
