On a cold Tuesday afternoon the Canton Girls JV Soccer Squad hosted the Madrid-Waddington Yellowjackets. The game began with what looked to be a continuation of pre-game practice as it took each team several minutes to get warmed up before the soccer action began to take place. The Bears found themselves on the Jackets doorstep on many occasions early in the game but were never quite able to ring the doorbell to let themselves in. Some outstanding play by the visiting goal tender and a few errant shots by the Bears allowed the game to be tied at 0-0 over the first 15 minutes of the match.
The Bears were finally able to strike as Maysa Moumen tickled the twine with a shot which just entered the left side of the goal. Apparently the other girls liked what they saw because Stella Shipman decided to put in her next two shots for two goals of her own, followed by another rip from Gabriella Taylor.
Coach Andy Fanning’s team would continue to test their abilities by scoring a few more goals. Ava Hoy netted her first career assist with a touch pass to Claire Coakley who calmly placed her shot into the back of the net. Hoy then scored her first career goal on a nice assist from Gabby Taylor. Not to be outdone in the battle of the Gabby’s, Gariella Schuckers decided to get into the action late with a goal of her own.
Ava Hoy and Faith Christy shared time in the Canton goal with the shutout and all of the girls were thankful for the sideline parkas which were provided by the Canton Booster Club a few years ago. The JV girls will be back in action on Wednesday, November 4 as they travel to OFA for a 4:00 pm game.
