On Friday the Canton JV Boys (3-0) hit the road traveling down Route 11 to face their rival the Potsdam Sandstoners. The young Bears have had a strong start to the season topping the Central power M’s (Malone and Massena) in their previous two games.
On Friday the junior Bears started slow as they were playing against the wind and got down 2-0 early in the first half. After adjusting to the wind and the turf Canton evened up the score by halftime on goals from Josh Aldous and Jonney McLear. In the second half the Golden Bears settled in and put up three more goals, two by Josh Aldous to give him the Hat Trick and one more on a beautiful header by Garrett Palmer. Ethan Francey ended the game with three assists and Jacob Rosalas had one. Cade Chezumhad 7 saves.
The Bears will be back in action on Monday when they will face off against Malone on Roger Dusharm field in Canton. Game time is 4 p.m.
The JV Girls Soccer team also boosted their record to 3-0 by knocking off Potsdam on Friday by the score of 4-0. Scoring for the Lady Bears were Emily Estabrook, Gabby Taylor, Lindsey Filiatrault and Stella Shipman. Ava Hoyended the game with two saves.
On the Varsity Soccer front, Thursday night both the boys and girls soccer teams faced off against tough Gouverneur squads. The Golden Bears split on the day as the boys topped the Wildcats 4-1, while the girls fell 2-1.
The boys (4-0) remained unbeaten atop the Central Division after pulling away with three goals in the second half. Rhett Palmer scored the Bears’ lone first half goal unassisted and Nick Eastrabrooks upped the margin to 2-0 in the ninth minute of the second half off an assist by Matt Haycook. The Bears took control with unassisted goals by Colin Taylor and Tanner Hazelton. Parker Hunt (1) and Hayden Todd (3) combined for four saves for Canton. Hazelton’s goal was the play of the game as he blasted it in left footed from 30 yards out.
Game Note: Rhett Palmer has scored in every one of Canton’s games this year after taking last year’s soccer season off to play Hockey in Canada.
On the Girls side it was another intense matchup between the two proud programs. The Lady Wildcats won a duel of NAC Central unbeatens. Canton’s (3-1) lone goal came from Sydnee Francison a beautiful header off a cross from fellow sophomore Etta Coburn in the second half. Emily Wentworth made 11 saves in the game for Canton.
Game Note: This is Senior, Emily Wentworth’s first year playing Soccer. She is a Section X record holder for the Canton Girls Swim Team that usually swims in the fall.
Both teams will be in action again on Saturday as they face off against their route 11 rival, the Potsdam Sandstoners. The boys will play at 1 p.m. on the turf in Potsdam and the girls will face off on Roger Dusharm field in Canton at 10 a.m.
