Due to the current situation, CDC is recommending the following application of our mass gathering guidance nationwide:
Large events and mass gatherings can contribute to the spread of COVID-19 in the United States via travelers who attend these events and introduce the virus to new communities. Examples of large events and mass gatherings include conferences, festivals, parades, concerts, sporting events, weddings, and other types of assemblies.
Therefore, CDC, in accordance with its guidance for large events and mass gatherings, recommends that for the next 8 weeks, organizers (whether groups or individuals) cancel or postpone in-person events that consist of 50 people or more throughout the United States. Events of any size should only be continued if they can be carried out with adherence to guidelines for protecting vulnerable populations, hand hygiene, and social distancing. When feasible, organizers could modify events to be virtual.
The Northern Athletic Conference/Section X schools will remain in a shutdown due to the spread of coronavirus; all athletic teams both Winter & Spring have to put their seasons on hold. In the best interest of our student-athletes and their health and wellness, It has been decided at this time to suspend extracurricular activities (athletic related) until further notice, effective Monday March 16, 2020. This shutdown is in collaboration with the Mandated School closures of the St. Lawrence-Lewis and Franklin-Essex-Hamilton BOCES shutdown.
This is all a very fluid situation and we will continue to communicate with you as things develop. We will continue to follow the CDC, Dept. of Health or Governors directives as they are issued to our School communities. The New York State Public High School Athletic Association will be issuing a statement later this week about the status of our Winter Sport Championships. NYSPHSAA and Sections are in an information gathering phase at this point to make fact-based and data drive decisions for the remainder of the school year. Further discussions about Spring Sport schedules and Spring Sport Championships will be made later this month as the status of this crisis unfolds and when it is determined, we can all return to our schools.
The NYSPHSAA and its (11) eleven sections have several meetings scheduled for the next month via teleconference.
