The Canton Boys Varsity Hockey Team came out of its league rivalry match-up against the Massena Red Raiders with a 1-1 tie on Friday.
The Canton Pavilion was packed to the brim Friday night, with both schools’ student sections filling nearly half of the arena.
In front of the packed crowd, Massena struck first banging in a lose puck to make the game 1-0 half way through the first, and though Canton out shot Massena by over 10 shots, Massena had the 1-0 edge heading into the second.
Canton struck back early in the second when sophomore forward Rhett Palmer carried the puck into the Raider zone and ripped a shot off of the end glass, which took a Canton bounce onto the stick of junior forward Trey Bessette who buried the rebound past the Massena goaltender.
The 1-1 stalemate held all throughout the third period, despite Canton controlling much of the play throughout the final period, sending the game into overtime.
Neither team was able to bury in overtime, which was relatively back and forth. The game ended in a 1-1 tie, with the Bears earning one league point.
Sophomore goaltender Hayden Todd was solid between the pipes, fending off 31 shots.
Canton is back in action Sunday February 2nd at 10 AM against state ranked Mcquaid-Jesuit (Rochester) in a non-league match-up at the SUNY Canton Roo’s House.
