Girls Varsity Basketball Beats Gouverneur at Home

In an electric atmosphere, the Canton girls varsity team beat Gouverneur and clinched the Central Division title for Section X with a 53-42 victory. The Golden Bears came out playing fast and continued this speed throughout the contest. The Wildcats played a scrappy game and made baskets in critical moments, however the Bears knew how to answer and come out on top at the end.

While Canton was playing strong defense and creating turnovers, they struggled to rebound in the first half. They also struggled to make outside shots throughout the contest, only making one the entire game, and found themselves adjusting to drive to the basket. Both teams got caught in foul trouble early as the game play was physical. The second half, Canton was more disciplined with regards to fouling, and improved on rebounding. The lead was held by the Golden Bears for the entirety of the game, yet the Wildcats were always right on the heels of their competitors.

Scoring for the Bears, Katie Chisholm had 19 points, Maddie Hoy had 15, and Hailee Duvall went six for six from the free-throw line. Lexi Huiatt and Sarah Sieminski each added four points. The Bears were pleased with their performance and hope to improve offensive ball movement and decrease turnovers in upcoming games.

They hit the hardwood again on Monday night at 7 p.m. against Salmon River. Thank you to the fans for the loud support and the pink-wear to support Cancer awareness. Go Bears!
