Canton JV girls drop hard-fought contest to Gouverneur

On Thursday night, the Canton girls JV basketball team faced off with the undefeated Gouverneur Wildcats in a packed Jerry Hourihan Gymnasium.  The Bears were trying to avenge a 25-point loss to the Cats in December.

The Bears showed off their improved game keeping the game tight throughout the entire game but ended up losing the contest 53-48.  Ava Hoy and Mattie Porter led all scorers with 19 and 14 points on the night.  Also putting points on the board for the young Bears were Amelia Rodee (five points, 10 rebounds), Hadley Alguire (four poinst), and Lindsey Filiatrault (two points).

“We had a game plan going in that we had been working on for the last week and the girls almost pulled it off.  I am proud of the entire team.  Cam Sipher did a great job holding their best player to seven points and Mattie Porter had a career high scoring night.  If we could have done a little better boxing out and rebounding the results might have been different but we definitely came to play and it was an awesome atmosphere,” Coach Mike Wentworth said.

The girls will be heading on the road again to South Jeff for a 4:30 p.m. game on Wednesday.
