Girls Varsity Basketball Wins in Malone

Holding on for a three point victory, the Canton Girls Varsity Basketball team beat Malone on the road, Monday night, 37-34. The game was low scoring with a back-and-forth style of play. The Golden Bears remain undefeated in league play and are now one win away from clinching the Central Division title for Section X.

Canton’s Katie Chisholm scored a lay-up off of the jump ball and the Bears went on to score 10 more in the first quarter. After a week-long hiatus, Canton was ready to get on the floor and show off their improvement. The Bears struggled to score despite their focus on offensive sets over the week of practice. The team also lacked defensive intensity at times.

This scoring dry-spell hit in the second half, where the Bears scored six and eight points in the third and fourth quarters respectively. With one minute left in regulation the Bears held the lead by one possession, and eventually the Huskies had the ball with two seconds to play. Franklin Academy in-bounded the ball and made one pass. Just after the buzzer Malone’s Madison Ansari shot the ball, and made the three pointer. The Bears were a half-second away from overtime, but the win is one regardless.

Canton held the lead for the entirety of the contest. Scoring for the Bears were Chisholm with 15 points, Lexi Huiatt with nine and Sarah Sieminski with eight. Although not their best performance, Canton was pleased with the win and hopes to put on their best performance at home on Thursday. Many aspects of the game were good markers of where the Bears hope to continue improving as the playoffs approach. Thursday in the Houli Gymnasium, Canton will face Gouvernour at 7 p.m.

This meeting will be Canton’s “Coaches vs Cancer” game and the teams will be donating money to The Lodge @ Dreaming Tree Ranch in honor of Sami Curtis. Please come support the Golden Bears and wear pink. Go Bears!
