On Monday the Canton girls JV basketball team traveled to Syracuse to play in the second day of the Martin Luther King Tournament at Bishop Grimes School. The first day of the tournament was postponed Sunday for the Bears due to bad weather so the junior Bears faced off with Cardinal O’Hara from the Buffalo area on Monday.
Canton started out strong and went into the locker room at halftime with a 27-20 lead. The second half was more of the same and the Bears finished with a 53-43 victory.
“It didn’t take long for us to shake off the bus legs and get into the flow of the game today. This was a nice team win and we were able to get everyone a lot of playing time on the road trip,” said Coach Mike Wentworth.
Mattie Porter had the hot hand for the Bears tossing in a season high 13 points. Ava Hoy matched Porter with a 13-point effort of her own. Also scoring for Canton was Amelia Rodee (eight points), Camryn Sipher (six points), Lindsey Filiatrault and Hadley Alguire (five points), Kayla Larrabee and Alyssa Jacob (one point).
The Bear Cubs will be in action a little closer to home on Wednesday as they head to Lisbon in a JV game only. Game time is 6 p.m.
