On Thursday, Dec. 26 and Dec. 27, the Canton girls JV basketball team didn’t waste any time trying to burn off the Christmas cookies as they traveled to Syracuse to play in the 2019 Holiday Classic-Hoops for Hospital Basketball Tournament at Onondaga Community College.
In the opening round, the junior Bears faced a 5-0 Westhill team and battled with them until the end but came up short eventually losing 38-26. The teams were tied at the break but Canton was shut out in the third quarter.
“We just had a hard time scoring in the third quarter and that put us in a hole that we just couldn’t climb out of,” remarked Coach Mike Wentworth.
Canton was led by Ava Hoy who tossed in 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Also filling up some boxes in the scorebook where Amelia Rodee six points, 14 rebounds, Camryn Sipher and Mattie Porter three points.
On Saturday night in the consolation game the Bear Cubs faced Owego and played maybe their most complete game of the year coming away with a 38-27 victory.
“We finally started to run the floor and scored some points in transition,” said Coach Wentworth. “Camryn Sipher and Lindsey Filiatrault played a great defensive game and Amelia Rodee, Mattie Porter and Ava Hoy controlled the boards in the victory.”
Totals on the night were Rodee 13 points, 15 rebounds, Hoy, Filiatrault seven points, Porter five points, Sipher three points, Courtney Peters two points and Phoebe Jaskowski one point.
The Bears record stands at 4-3 on the season and will be back on the court in Norwood on Friday as they will travel to face the Flyers in a JV game only. Game time is noon.
