With wins over St. Lawrence Central and Peru, the Canton Varsity Girls Basketball team won their home tournament, the Petty Tournament.

82-44 the Bears beat the Larries in the first round of play. This match-up was a chance for Canton to fine tune their defenses and work on offensive sets. Canton also got the chance to work on different line ups and allow many players to contribute to the win.

Jillian DiSavlo had a breakout game against St. Lawrence Central, scoring 11 points off the bench and played her best game of the season. She hopes to continue this in upcoming play. Five Golden Bears scored double digit points and 10 girls scored. Along with DiSalvo, Gretchen Warner and Sarah Sieminski contributed 11 points. Katie Chisholm scored 15 points to lead the buckets for Canton, and Maddie Hoy had 14 points.

Saturday, Canton faced Peru who had beaten Lowville the previous night. This was the championship game and Canton was determined to come out with a trophy. After the first quarter Canton held on to the lead at 14-11. The second quarter was when the Bears broke out of their shell and showed their true ability. Strong defense and incredible rebounding led the team to transition buckets. Canton’s speed helped them beat Peru down the floor and the team capitalized on the many fast-breaks with layups.

The second half was more of Canton’s relentless defense and fast break offense. Ultimately, Canton won with a score of 60-45. Katie Chisholm scored 18 points, Sarah Sieminski had 15, and big girls Gretchen Warner and Maddie Hoy added eight and seven points respectively. Warner had an outstanding night on the boards, she battled under the basket for many loose balls and was the starter to many of the fast break plays with her outlet passes.

Sarah Sieminski was selected to the All-Tournament team, and Katie Chisholm was named Tournament MVP. Jillian DiSalvo was the Sami Curtis Award Winner for Sportsmanship and Student-Athlete Excellence. The Bears play again in Salmon River on Monday at 1 P.M. Go Bears!
